April 2017

Dear brothers and sisters in our Savior,

For your information, the book 1984 that George Orwell wrote back in 1949, has seen a big bump in sales lately. I don’t know what triggered this increase. You may know that this novel predicts “Big Brother” who/which would know everything about each citizen of the nation. In 2017, E-mail accounts are hacked and identity theft seems to happen quite often. The risk of these things is high if you are a smart phone. (Irene and I got ours about six weeks ago.) Of course, there’s good old-fashioned wiretapping, not to mention drones that are misused for spying on the unwary. Do we have any privacy left? Does this bother you?

I suppose some might choose to buy an isolated 100 acre tract of land in Alaska, erect a house and live there, get rid of all electronic devices, and become a hermit. Yep, that might solve the problem though that’s not a realistic solution for most.

More realistic is getting rid of all electronic devices, though that’s painful for some. Be wise in the use of computers, etc. and keep your Social Security and other numbers and information private. Use a variety of passwords to confuse would-be hackers.

Above all, remember that the Lord is bigger than your worst enemy. His broad shoulders will bear your burdens and carry you through every fear with which you are afflicted. He does this for me, too. A few verses that have lifted me up in troubled times include: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with their surging...Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:1-3, 10).

The psalmist’s inspired words use earthquake imagery. When everything secure is falling apart (or seems to be) the Lord is our refuge and strength. Friends, I’m not telling you this because it’s the 500th anniversary since the Reformation and Luther wrote his famous hymn: “A Mighty Fortress is our God” based on these verses. I’m telling you this because fear is all over and the Lord is the One being who is always trustworthy and able to help.

Keep me in your prayers and I will do the same for you, dear ones in Christ.
